Dung Beetles In Action! (If you have trouble viewing the video, you may need to upgrade your Windows Media Player) The dung beetles in the above video clip are busy working on Orangutan droppings in the forest of Tanjung Puting National Park on the island of Borneo in Indonesia. Within minutes of hitting the ground, the dung attracts a pair of beetles who work quickly to carve off a piece large enough for their brood. In what seems like an instant, the pair begin rolling the near-perfect sphere off to a spot where they will lay eggs on it. They will then bury it so their offspring can develop in relative safety - protected from both predators and the effects of exposure. Eventually the beetle grubs will pupate and finally emerge as adult beetles searching for their own pile of dung!
